MUSICAL COMEDY; Family Christmas Show: The spirit of a bygone era is evoked in this show with music by various composers. The world was at war and pop music meant "The Chattanooga Choo-Choo" and the "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy." This is a look at behind the scenes radio as you view a live, Christmas time broadcast of a musical variety hour from the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room on December 21, 1942; The Mutual Manhattan Variety cavalcade. An exhilarating hour of singing, dancing and funny commercials.

The Republic of Poetry - Poet Martin Espada.

The Ancient Art of Beadwork.

Find your creative side through use of seed beads, needle and thread to create beautiful pieces of jewelry. This beginner's class will introduce techniques such as ladder, brick, peyote and herringbone stitch.

CSM Children's Show Auditions, "The Jungle Book"

Christ Church Concerts is pleased to present pianist and visual artist, Jeanne Farewell, in recital and exhibition on Sunday, November 11, at 3:00 in the afternoon. 

Pianist JEANNE FAREWELL has performed in the United States, Europe, and China.  Her performances in the U.S. have included the Yale Center for British Art, Harvard Musical Association, Steinway Hall, the American Landmark Festivals and other venues in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and the east.  In Europe, she has been solo recitalist in London's Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall complex, at the University of Edinburgh and in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as in Austria and Germany.  In China, she has performed at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Beijing Conservatory of Music, and Shanghai Concert Hall.  Her playing of the music of Carlos Gustavino was broadcast live last year from the Cervantes Institute on WQXR Radio in New York City.  A graduate of Vassar College, Miss Farewell also studied piano at the Manhattan School of Music.  She is also a writer, and her stories and essays have been published in literary journals here and in London.  Her collection of stories, Nantucket Snow, is now available.  

07.11.11, Farewell, ChurningButter.jpg (1391360 bytes)As a visual artist, Jeanne has created theater posters, greeting cards, and paintings of America's rural past.  Her work was recently shown in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.  Miss Farewell's artwork, which finds its inspiration in the American Folk Art tradition, will be on display, with some pieces for sale.  Her varied program will include a musical tribute to America's veterans. 

Christ Church is located at 112 East Charles Street in downtown La Plata .  There is ample parking behind the church and adjacent county government buildings.  The church is handicapped- accessible.  The concert will be followed by an outdoor reception (weather permitting).  Please call (301) 392-1051 for further information.

CSM International Week Celebration: 

Nov. 12, 10-11 a.m.  "Anansegromma of Ghana".  Using traditional African dances, songs, drums and interactive call and response audiences will experience West African culture first-hand.  Free.

Nov. 12, 12 - 1:30 p.m.  CSM presents the animated classic "The Lion King," about the adventures
of a young lion cub who wants to be king, his friends, enemies and the long journey to the throne. Free.

Nov. 12, 2 - 3:30p.m. CSM features the hit movie "Madagascar" about pampered zoo animals that have to adjust to life in the wild after being accidentally stranded in Africa. Free. 

Nov. 14, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. CSM features the movies "Hotel Rwanda" and "Blood Diamond" alternatively throughout the day. Free.

The Korean American Association of Southern Maryland (KAASM),  in cooperation with the Richard R. Clark Senior Center invite you to a very special Thanksgiving event. This year, the two organizations will come together, along with Korean senior citizens traveling from Virginia and Baltimore, to celebrate this year's Thanksgiving holiday in the traditional Korean style. We invite you all to join us for this unique event!

Who:  Korean American Association Of Southern Maryland, Richard R. Clark Senior Center, and Senior Citizens traveling from Virginia and Baltimore.

What:  

  • American Thanksgiving celebration celebrated in the traditional manner, referred to as Chusok   
  • A Korean cooking demonstration/class to learn to make the traditional Korean food , songpyeon 
  • A special traditional arts performance performed by Seniors and professional Korean traditional arts performers
  • Traditional lunch

When:  Thursday, November 15 from 10:30AM - 2PM
