Toward
More Meaningful Engagement with Art:
a
joint project of MICA's Center for Art Education, the
Maryland State Department of Education, and a co-
sponsored academy of the National Art Education
Association.
Program
Overview
Who Should Attend
The Institute is designed with early career art teachers
in mind, especially those coming from undergraduate art
teacher preparation programs. It will help advance their
teaching to a higher level informed by better practice,
research, and theory in art education. Mid-career
teachers wanting to finesse their practice are also
welcome.
Graduate
Credits
Tuition includes three graduate credits from MICA
provided participants attend all program events, invest
equally in their own growth and the investigations of
their study group, engage in the on-line exchange of
ideas, share digital portfolios, implement assessment
processes and criteria, and provide a reflective account
of the ways in which the institute has fostered deeper
and more meaningful engagement with art.
Program
Features
A sampling of the many opportunities MICA's Summer
Teacher Institute will provide:
* Select a Studio-Based Study Group:
- Empowering Students through Painting with Duane
Sabiston
- Stories at Hand, Clay Techniques, Global
Perspectives: A Ceramics Workshop with Mary Mark
Munday
- Holistic Approaches with Non-Toxic, Economical,
Printmaking for all Grades, K-12 with Katie Morris
- Contemporary Art, Project Runway, and the Lived
Curriculum: Dress up your living curriculum with a 'mashup'
of contemporary art and ideas inspired by Project
Runway with Dan Barney
* Take workshops in creating digital portfolios
for assessment purposes.
* Live and work in an art school culture with a
critical mass of graduate students forging new bodies of
artwork, conducting research in the classroom, and
working in community. Attend openings, exhibitions,
artist-talks, and presentations on research.
* Go home with a new body of studio work and
ideas for future investigations, renewed enthusiasm for
making art and teaching, teaching ideas to test in your
classroom, including processes and criteria for
authentic assessment, and skills needed to construct
digital portfolios.
* Enter into a reflective dialogue on-line with
the study group as you test ideas in your classroom.
* Return to campus for a winter reunion over
Martin Luther King weekend in January '09 to join in a
reflective discussion of the ways in which approaches to
teaching and making art have changed due to
participation in the institute.
- Summer Dates: Tuesday evening July 8 through
Friday afternoon July 18, 2008; the ten-day schedule
includes evening events and weekend studio hours
