The
Chesapeake Choral Arts Society is supported by a grant
from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated
to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts
thrive.
Partial funding is also provided by the Charles
County Arts Alliance whose mission is to stimulate,
promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts
and the creative spirit. Donations and membership
fees also provide support to this growing community
musical endeavor. To obtain a flyer or more information

THE
ROMANTIC PERIOD
Depending
upon which book you read or which class you take, the
Romantic Period can encompass a
vast number of different dates.
In my music appreciation course at the
College
of
Southern Maryland
you would memorize a standard date reference of 1825-1900.
This has been used for many years as a good
measure—it begins with the premiere of Beethoven's 9th
Symphony and ends nice and evenly with 1900, roughly four
years after Brahms' death and one year before the death
of Verdi. This
time period also brings to mind many other well known
labels that roughly correspond to these dates:
The Victorian Era, The Industrial Revolution, the
time of the Civil War and the era of Reconstruction as
well as the era of Empire building, when a few mighty
European nations were grabbing up real estate all over
Asia and Africa under the pretense of bringing "civilization"
to primitive peoples.
Sounds like a very exciting
time because it was
a very exciting time.
The
Chesapeake Choral Arts Society, under the direction of
yours truly, will be spending the next two seasons
concentrating on music from this exciting time period.
However, our approach is going to be a unique one
for our group. We
will perform all three concerts this year in period
costume and a bit of staging.
All of our concerts have music representing the
entirety of the era. We
will also be including: readings from novels and poetry,
scenes performed in contemporary theatre style, games
played that were popular then and food served that was
familiar at the time and is representational of the
particular theme for the evening's festivities.
Thanks
to all who attended our first concert, "A Dickens Christmas," on December 15.
The concert featured music from the start to
the finish of the Romantic period, as well as a few choice
readings. It
was a lot of fun and hopefully helped prepare you for our second annual pops concert, "'Pop'
Goes the Music."
"'Pop'
Goes the Music" will concentrate on the popular music from the
Romantic period. We
will be starting with the music of Stephen Foster and will
work up through the "Gay Nineties."
We will also feature an extensive review of the
African-American Spiritual genre, as well as a medley from
the Civil War and a little taste of Ragtime.
Our final performance of the year will be on May
31, "An Evening with the Romantics."
I will be telling you all about that in future
articles. I
hope you will come out and support our wonderful choral
organization, which has doubled in size since last season,
and I am proud to say, so has our ambition.
I think you will enjoy what you hear and see at our
concerts this year. Come,
and embrace the "Romantic" in you.
