"The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940" by John Bishop

The La Plata Theatre Arts will be presenting "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940" by John Bishop
on Nov. 17 & 18 at 7:00 and on Sunday Nov. 19 at 2:00pm in the La Plata Auditorium.

Cost is $5/adult, $4/student, $3/thespian

The play is about the creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop (in which three chorus
girls were murdered by the mysterious "Stage Door Slasher") assemble for a backer's audition of
their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy "angel." The house is replete with sliding
panels, secret passageways and a German maid who is apparently four different people all of which
figure diabolically in the comic mayhem which follows when the infamous "Slasher" makes his
reappearance and strikes again and again. As the composer, lyricist, actors and director prepare
their performance, and a blizzard cuts off any possible retreat, bodies start to drop in plain sight,
knives spring out of nowhere, masked figures drag their victims behind swiveling bookcases, and
accusing fingers point in all directions. However, and with no thanks to the bumbling police
inspector who snowshoes in to investigate, the mystery is solved in the nick of time and the "Slasher"
unmasked but not before the audience has been treated to a sidesplitting good time and a generous
serving of the author's biting, satiric and refreshingly irreverent wit.

Fate Plays Its Hand in CSM Performance of 'Kismet'

Fall Musical to be Presented Nov. 10-12, Nov. 17-19

Prepare yourself for a magical carpet-ride, packed with love, laughter and song when the College of Southern Maryland's Theatre Company presents "Kismet," its fall musical, Nov. 10-12 and 17-19.

Set in Baghdad over a 24-hour time span, "Kismet" is a musical story of poets, beggars and love in the hands of fate. First written by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis, the story has been told in various versions since 1911, from silent film to video, including the Broadway operetta in 1953 that ran for nearly 600 performances.

Described as a rollicking ride with a thrilling score, "Kismet" is best-known for the music by Alexander Borodin, George Forrest and Robert Wright and lyrics of Robert Wright and George Forrest in songs such as "And This is My Beloved", "Stranger in Paradise", "Baubles Bangles and Beads", "Not Since Nineveh" and "Gesticulate".

The story is based on the play by Edward Knoblock and revolves around fast-talking Hajj the Poet and his daughter Marsinah as they get tangled up with the Wazir and the voluptuous Lalume, amongst others.

CSM's cast includes Bob White as Poet, Allison Mehaffey as Marsinah, Nick Brightwell as Wazir, Alex Deleon as Caliph, Gary Richardson as Chief of Police, Greg Rumpf as Jawan, Sean Hare as Bangle Man and JoAnn Tardibuono as Lalume.

Performances are Nov. 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $13 for students/seniors, and $15 for adults. For information or reservations, call the Box Office, 301-934-7828, 301-870-3008, Ext. 7828 (TDD 301-934-1188) or e-mail bxoffc@csmd.edu or visit www.csmd.edu/finearts.
