Connections Literary Series presents Evans and Zamora

Connections Literary Series presents poets George Evans and Daisy Zamora Oct. 6, 7:30 p.m.,
at the College of Southern Maryland, Leonardtown Campus, Building A Auditorium, 22950 Hollywood Road.
Evans is the author of four books of poetry, including his latest collection, Sudden Dreams, and is the
editor of the Streetfare Journal, which displays poetry and art in buses. He has received fellowships from
the Lannan Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Zamora is painter, psychologist and the author
of three books of poetry, including 2002's The Violent Foam, and has been showcased in the Bill Moyers'
Language of Life Series. Zamora was recently named the 2006 Nicaraguan Writer of the Year (Escitora del Ao)
by the National Assembly of Nicaragua (Asamblea Nacional) in Managua. Cost $2.

Connections Literary Series Call for Submissions

Call for Submissions. Connections, the literary journal of the College of Southern Maryland,
is seeking submissions for its fall 2006 issue. Local writers and photographers are encouraged
to send in their poetry, prose, essays and black and white photography to Connections@csmd.edu.
Deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 31. Publication reading will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. at

LYRA, Russian a cappella ensemble

Returning for a third visit is the a cappella ensemble, LYRA.  This six-member group from St. Petersburg, Russia, will present a two-part program consisting of sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church followed by folk songs in all their variety-comic, lyric, dancing, romantic!  Interspersed with spoken English commentary by announcer, Sergey Tupitsyn, the program is sure to delight and inform you.  Cash donations received this afternoon will go directly to the singers of LYRA.

Manhattan Piano Trio

Manhattan Piano Trio (MPT) is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the most versatile and exciting chamber music groups coming out of New York City.  The Trio is comprised of  Milana Bahl (Piano), Dmitry Lukin (Violin) and Dmitry Kouzov (Cello). The two Dmitrys are from St. Petersburg, Russia, and met Milana, the founding member of the trio, literally on the front steps of The Juilliard School of Music during the summer of 2004.  Manhattan Piano Trio strives to evoke a range of pure human emotions through musical harmony, collaboration and creative programming.

Schubert Singers Autumn Auditions


Schubert Singers, a concert choir for children, seeks children in 3rd-8th grade who like to sing beautiful music. We will learn and perform folk songs, spirituals, and music by classical and contemporary composers that is especially suited for the young voice.

An audition/rehearsal will be held on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gertrude Mitchell Room of Christ Church, 112 East Charles Street, La Plata, MD. Auditionees will participate in a short rehearsal and then sing alone or in pairs. Rehearsals will begin the following Tuesday, October 17, for those singers making successful auditions.

Rehearsals will be held at Christ Church on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:15. Each rehearsal will include time for learning the skills of sight-singing, correct vocal production, part-singing, and the preparation of music for a winter concert (to be performed at several venues). A nominal fee is required for the purchase of music.

Angela Garvey and Kathy Doyle are co-directors of the ensemble, and Alicia Cordelle serves as vocal consultant and coach. Children who cannot attend the October 10 audition may schedule a private audition on Saturday, October 14.

Children's "Haunted Stage"

The La Plata International Thespian Troupe #2621 will be offering a children's "Haunted Stage"
for kids ages 5-10.  The event is to raise food for a local food bank in coordination with TOTS-EAT:
Trick or Treat so Kids can Eat. 

The "Haunted Stage" is on Oct. 28 and 29 from 3-6pm.  Cost is a canned food donation.

"Because hunger is a very scary thing"

Performance Dates: October  20, 21, 27, 28 - 8:00pm all performances are at the Hard Bargain Amphitheatre, 2001 Bryan Point Road, Accokeek.

We begin seating at 7:30 p.m. and the production begins at 8:00 p.m. - we suggest arriving by 7:45 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students, seniors and Alice Ferguson Foundation Members.
Walk-ins are welcome, reservations are not required but can be made by email (reservations@hbplayers.org), phone (301-392-9901), or by using our online form - http://www.hbplayers.org.

HBP is an outdoor amphitheatre and the players perform rain or shine. Shows are only cancelled in the event of severe weather conditions. Umbrellas are encouraged. NEW IN 2006 - in the event of rain we now have covered seats available - so be sure to arrive early to sit under cover!!!! Comfortable clothing and bug spray are also highly recommended.
All performances are at the Hard Bargain Amphitheatre, 2001 Bryan Point Road, Accokeek. The Amphitheater is located approximately 2 miles west of Indian Head Highway (Route 210) on Bryan Point Road in Accokeek, Maryland. Turn west from Route 210 onto Livingston Road. (NOTE: Livingston Road crosses 210 several times before you turn. The intersection you want is at B&J Carryout.) Immediately turn right onto Biddle Road. Immediately turn left onto Bryan Point Road. About 2 miles down on the right, you'll see a small sign for the Alice Ferguson Foundation and Hard Bargain Farm. This is the entrance to the outdoor Amphitheatre. Park at the first available space. The Amphitheater is a short walk using the lighted path to the left and down the hill. Handicapped parking is available. Please call 301-392-9901 to make arrangements.
