Stage Training Apprentice Mentor Program (STAMP)

Join the team of leaders in the community who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children!

This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for folks in Charles County!

Even if you think you might just want to check it out and come to the training so you can be a support person, please reply. We need a variety of skills and ideas to make this program a success.

Can you spare 2 afternoons a week starting in September (for 9 months) for the upcoming school year (3-5pm Tu/Th)?

2-3 more Volunteer Mentors Needed

We need your help for the coming school year to help reach at-risk teens by introducing them to the world of theatre. Stage Training Apprentice Mentor Program (STAMP), our innovative after-school program, touches on the main requirements of the "No Child Left Behind" act: fluency, phonics and phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Forty four children have registered for the 2007-08 school year.

Come join us in this rewarding experience. We're changing lives!

Some of the teens have been poor academic performers, and reading and performing plays is helping them learn. Smallwood's Reading Instructor, Janet Jones, says the program accomplishes a difficult task."  Some of the students are in intervention programs and the others are in enrichment programs. This enables very different students to work together while performing."

Program coordinator Dr. William "Bill" Barton works on the youngster's fluency and vocabulary as they repeatedly read through the script, concentrating on root words and Latin origins. He also stresses clear enunciation for performance purposes, which helps with phonics and phonemic awareness. By incorporating plays from different time periods, students are introduced to unusual turns of phrase and unfamiliar concepts, which aids in comprehension.  Dr. Barton says he has seen dramatic changes in the students in the program's very short lifespan. "Attitudinally, the kids have changed immeasurably.  We have two kids for the second time who volunteered to come back. Their level of maturity has changed."

In addition to Dr. Barton, STAMP currently has one mentor, 32-year-old Kelly Boyd. Mentors are paid a small stipend for their involvement. The program seeks many other mentors and Barton says he envisions STAMP reaching far more students as it grows. "I'd like to see it in every school in Charles County. I'll take as many kids and mentors as will come."

STAMP receives funding from grants and donations and is offered at no charge to children of greatest need. Donations may be sent to CBFT, Inc, PO Box 1098, Indian Head, MD 20640.

If you would like to help as a mentor with STAMP, please respond quickly. For additional information on STAMP, contact Peggy Palmer at 301-743-3040.
